3 Tips to Get the Most out of Online Tutoring

Online tutoring is increasingly popular, and as online tutors hone their skills, it’s becoming an excellent way for students to get extra help with their education. Like anything, however, you only get out what you put in. For best results, use these online tutoring tips to help you get the most out of your tutoring sessions.

Be Prepared and On Time

If you already have a dedicated study space where you can work free from distractions, this can be a great place for online tutoring sessions, too. If not, try to create one by finding a quiet spot where you can work uninterrupted for the length of the session. If noise is a problem, use a headset with a microphone so that you can talk to and hear your online tutor more easily.

For each session, make it a habit to be ready five to 10 minutes before your designated start time. That way you’ll have plenty of time to take care of last-minute problems that might cause a delay, and you’ll be focused and ready to go when the session begins.

Stay Focused

To get the most benefit out of online tutoring, it’s vital that all your attention stay focused on the task at hand. So, just like you’ve prepared by creating a dedicated study space that’s free from distraction, it’s important to keep distractions to a minimum throughout each study session.

The best way to do this is to think of online tutoring as an extension of the school day. Avoid distractions such as social media, turn the TV off, and if you have errands or chores to do, get them done before you start or plan to do them after your session.

Learn Actively

Learning is more effective when your brain is actively engaged, but it’s not always easy to stay active and engaged during an online tutoring session. If certain kinds of activities make it hard for you to stay focused, let your tutor know, and ask if future lessons could be structured differently. For instance, if it’s hard for you to listen actively when your online tutor is reading out loud, a discussion or question-and-answer session might be a more effective way for you to learn.
