Getting the best out of online tutoring

Online tutoring is a great way for your child to improve their understanding of their class material, but the learning doesn’t need to stop there. In fact, it’s helpful if they can spend some extra time going over the material themselves, especially if there are concepts they’re still having trouble with. Here are three ways they can build on what they learn in their tutoring sessions.

Repeat the Session Work

During a tutoring session it’s usually helpful to take notes on what’s being discussed, and on the material that is being worked through. The notes are then available to refer to at any time. Note-taking is definitely important, but sometimes it’s also useful for your child to reread or repeat the material that they went over during an online tutoring session.

For practical subjects such as math and physics in particular, it’s necessary to go over the same material again before the next online tutoring session. For instance, reworking any problems that were solved during the session, without referring to notes or answers, can help your child reinforce their understanding of the concepts they’re learning about.

Explain What They Learned

The ability to explain difficult concepts is one of the hallmarks of a good online tutor, and it’s a great way for your child to improve their own understanding of course material. If your child is able to explain to you what they learn in each session, it’s a good indication that they’re understanding and retaining what they learn.

Prepare for the Next Session

In a typical class curriculum the content is structured so that each new unit builds on what was learned in previous ones. Online tutoring lessons are often structured in a similar way, so preparing for each new session is just as important as understanding the content covered in previous sessions. And in a way they’re actually the same thing, as understanding what’s already been covered is the best way to prepare for the session that’s coming up next.

As well as this, it can be helpful for your child to make a note of any new concepts or information they’re still struggling with, and any questions they have, so that they can continue getting the help they need in each session.
