Studying GCSE English helps students gain a vast knowledge of the English language. English is the third most common language in the globe and the primary language in the United Kingdom. It also helps students learn how to communicate correctly. CSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) is an academic qualification that was established in the year 1988. English Literature

Under the literature module students are examined in the following areas;

Nineteenth-Century Novel

In this area of studies, students have to analyze novels that were written in the nineteenth century. Students are introduced to different books of this kind. Students have to explain the concepts of pride and prejudice in nineteenth-century novels. They also have to study the novels to their entirety after which they have to come up with a plot summary. Students also get to discuss the main themes and the main characters in the novels. Students also get to review the essential quotations from the story.

Shakespeare Play

This part of GCSE English seeks that the students discuss and analyze Shakespeare and plays written by Shakespeare. Each year, a different play chosen by the organizers of the GCSEis given to students to consider. The students have to analyze and study the play. The students then have to come up with a plot summary for the acts. Additionally, the students have to discuss the main themes in the play one after another. The topics can differ from one student to another.

The students have to determine, name and explain each idea to completion. The main characters are also subject to analysis. Essential quotations from the play are also subject to discussion and analysis. The most common plays chosen in this criterion are Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet; two of the most popular Shakespeare plays.

Poetry

In this area, the students get to learn different techniques for analyzing poetry. This section does not involve a particular poem but the general concept of poetry. Students also get to study the critical themes in poetry and the techniques of poetry one after the other in-depth. Students also get to discuss and analyze rhyme schemes and read a bunch of poems in the process.

Drama

This section of GCSE English literature requires students to analyze different types of plays. The students have to discuss the main themes in the plays after reading the pieces and coming up with a comprehensive plot summary. The segment also involves an analysis of the main characters in the plays. A review also has to be done on the critical quotations in the plays. The students determine the quotes. Some famous plays that students have been quizzed on in GCSE English are A view from the Bridge and An Inspector Calls.

English Language

This module of the GCSE English is also split into the following:

Non-Fiction and Transactional Writing

In this section of the model, the students have to learn transactional writing skills and forms of non-fiction writing. The students also have to learn the concept of journalism, travel writing and the art or writing letters. Autobiographies and speeches are also part of non-fictional and transactional writing.

Poetry, Prose and Imaginative Writing

This section of the syllabus requires students to learn creative writing skills, innovative literary techniques, and comparing texts.

Grammar and Vocabulary

Students get to learn where and when to use formal and non-formal grammar and vocabulary. They also learn and get quizzed on the effectiveness and impact of text as well as their use in writing.

Spoken Language

Students study and get quizzed on presentation skills, preparation of answers, Question and Answer skills, and formats and techniques used in exams. Students also get to analyze the format for writing exam papers, the types of questions asked in exams and the answers to give for each. Exam techniques are also discussed in this section.

Essay

Construction of the essay requires efficient planning, the formation of the introduction, the main text or argument and formation of a conclusion. Students have to learn essay writing techniques to pass this module.
