What Does Elementary Science Cover?

Elementary science introduces students in kindergarten through 5th grade to life science, physical science, and earth and space science. Students learn about plants and animals, forces and motion, matter, energy, weather, and the solar system, and they practice asking questions, running simple investigations, and explaining what they observe. Most U.S. schools follow the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) or a state version of them.

Growing Stars provides personalized, one-on-one online elementary science tutoring that follows the student’s school curriculum and builds curiosity, vocabulary, and early scientific thinking.

Elementary Science Tutoring

Learn Science with Personalized 1-on-1 Support

Science in the elementary grades builds the foundation for every science course that follows. Students who fall behind on vocabulary, reading informational text, or basic concepts like matter and energy often find middle school science much harder.

Growing Stars tutors make science concrete with diagrams, simple at-home experiments, and step-by-step explanations. Sessions can follow the student’s textbook, homework, and upcoming tests, or focus on science fair projects and enrichment for students who want to go further.

What Do Students Learn in Elementary Science by Grade?

The table below follows the Next Generation Science Standards, which most states use or have adapted. Exact topics and order vary by state and school.

Grade Life Science Physical Science Earth and Space Science
Kindergarten What plants and animals need to survive Pushes and pulls Weather and how sunlight warms the Earth
Grade 1 Plant and animal parts, parents and offspring Light and sound Patterns of the sun, moon, and stars
Grade 2 Habitats, pollination, and seed dispersal Properties of materials and changes in matter Landforms, water, and how wind and water shape the land
Grade 3 Life cycles, inherited traits, and survival in changing environments Balanced and unbalanced forces and magnets Weather and climate patterns
Grade 4 Internal and external structures of plants and animals, and the senses Energy, speed, collisions, and waves Weathering, erosion, fossils, rock layers, and natural hazards
Grade 5 Food webs and how matter and energy move through ecosystems Particles of matter and conservation of mass Earth’s spheres, gravity, shadows, and star patterns

Elementary Science Example: Planning a Fair Test

Elementary students are asked to plan simple investigations, and science fair projects depend on the same skill. Consider:

Does a ball bounce higher on carpet or on a wood floor?

Step 1: Choose what to change

The only thing that changes is the surface: carpet or wood.

Step 2: Keep everything else the same

Use the same ball, drop it from the same height, and measure the bounce the same way each time.

Step 3: Measure, repeat, and compare

Drop the ball three times on each surface, record each bounce height, and compare the averages to answer the question.

A common mistake is dropping the ball from a different height each time, which makes the results unreliable. Tutors help students spot what needs to stay the same so their conclusions are based on fair evidence.

Each session is tailored to align with your child’s school curriculum and grade-level standards. Tutors reinforce classroom lessons while helping students fully understand scientific vocabulary and core concepts.

Online science tutoring provides personalized instruction that targets areas where students struggle. Tutors review class materials, clarify difficult concepts, and provide additional practice to strengthen comprehension. As students gain a clearer understanding of scientific ideas, they perform better on quizzes, tests, and classroom assignments. Improved understanding leads directly to higher science grades and increased classroom confidence.

Yes. Our tutors use your child’s textbook, homework assignments, and school pacing guides to ensure tutoring sessions complement classroom instruction. This alignment helps students feel more prepared for daily lessons and assessments. Rather than introducing unrelated material, tutoring reinforces what students are currently learning in school.

Absolutely. Tutors assist students with research planning, experiment design, data analysis, and presentation preparation. Guidance is provided while encouraging independent thinking. This support helps students complete projects with confidence and accuracy. It also strengthens research skills and scientific reasoning abilities.

Yes. Science tutoring encourages students to ask questions, analyze evidence, and draw logical conclusions. Tutors emphasize understanding over memorization. These critical thinking skills extend beyond science class, supporting overall academic growth and problem-solving abilities in other subjects.

Growing Stars elementary science tutoring covers kindergarten through 5th grade. Students in 6th grade and above can continue with Middle and High School Science, Biology, Chemistry, or Physics tutoring.
